Michael is a native of Wessex having been born and growing up in Bournemouth. After obtaining degrees in Geography and Soviet Foreign Policy from University College London  and SSEES Michael spent six years travelling in Asia and the Pacific and teaching in Australia.

After returning to England in 1979 Michael and his wife Sharron turned their enthusiasm and love of travel into a business and founded Casterbridge Tours, a Special Interest and Educational Tour Operator, and one of only a handful of travel companies to be awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise.

Michael lived in the Sherborne area for over 30 years as founder, CEO and Chairman of Casterbridge Tours before selling the company in April 2011.

He has a passion for and is a keen spectator of most sports, enjoys mountain walking and long distance cycling and playing tennis. Michael’s many interests include Rock Music, Opera and the Cinema, collecting Art Deco sculpture and Design. In 2005 his first book ‘Around the World with Yeovil Town’ was published and his second book ‘Dare to be Different – An Entrepreneur’s Toolkit’ is due to be published in 2013.

Michael has maintained a love of travel throughout his life and now lives overseas, spending time each year in Switzerland, Canada, the USA and Thailand as well as travelling in other areas.

He has been a keen photographer all his life and has an abiding love for the High Mountains. Michael has made 13 visits to the Himalaya including five treks to the three sides of Everest. He usually spends each summer hiking in the Alps and has walked to the summit of Kilimanjaro and to the Raphu La (21,500ft/6550m) on the eastern flank of Everest in Tibet - and always taking a compact camera!
